FOR 2006 THROUGH THE END OF OCTOBER - RAINFALL TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS WERE: - LIHUE AIRPORT 62.92 INCHES (208 PERCENT OF NORMAL) - HONOLULU AIRPORT 26.53 INCHES (201 PERCENT OF NORMAL) - KAHULUI AIRPORT 11.16 INCHES (81 PERCENT OF NORMAL) - HILO AIRPORT 112.16 INCHES (112 PERCENT OF NORMAL). NCEP CFS AND CCA INDICATE A TENDENCY TOWARDS BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURE FOR HAWAII FOR DECEMBER 2006. NCEP CFS ALSO PREDICTS TENDENCY TOWARDS BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION FOR HAWAII FOR DECEMBER 2006. SST ANOMALIES GREATER THAN +0.5ºC WERE OBSERVED IN MOST OF THE EQUATORIAL PACIFIC - WITH ANOMALIES EXCEEDING +1.0ºC BETWEEN 170ºE AND 145ºW AND BETWEEN 130ºW AND THE SOUTH AMERICAN COAST. WEAKER-THAN-AVERAGE LOW-LEVEL EQUATORIAL EASTERLY WINDS HAVE BEEN OBSERVED ACROSS MOST OF THE EQUATORIAL PACIFIC. SOI WAS NEGATIVE FOR THE SIXTH CONSECUTIVE MONTH. OVER THE PAST SEVERAL MONTHS MOST OF THE STATISTICAL AND COUPLED MODEL FORECASTS HAVE TRENDED TOWARDS WARMER CONDITIONS IN THE TROPICAL PACIFIC THROUGH THE NORTHERN HEMISPHERE WINTER. BASED ON RECENT TRENDS AND A MAJORITY OF THE STATSTICAL AND COUPLE MODEL FORECASTS - EL NINO CONDITIONS SHOULD INTENSIFY DURING THE NEXT 3 MONTHS AND WILL LIKELY CONTINUE THROUGH THE NORTHERN SPRING 2007. NCEP CFS AND CCA PREDICT A TENDENCY TOWARDS BELOW NORMAL TEMPERATURE FOR HAWAIIAN ISLANDS FORM DJF 2007 TO FMA 2007. NCEP CFS AND CCA INDICATE A TENDENCY TOWARDS BELOW NORMAL PRECIPITATION FROM DJF 2007 TO MAM 2007. SHORT TERM GLOBAL CLIMATE FLUCTUATIONS SUCH AS THE ENSO PHENOMENON ARE FOUND TO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE CLIMATE VARIABILITY IN HAWAII.
