Stationary Clouds over the Ocean ---------- ------ ---- --- ----- In the reanalysis, you may find small scale (order of 10 degrees longitude) stationary features over the oceans. The Gibb's effect strikes again. The surface elevation over the ocean is not flat (see DATA\FIXED\HGT.SFC), and this can produce stationary features. The ripples in the surface elevation can be reduced by filtering the orography (or going to grid model). However, the filtering tends to reduce the height and slopes of the mountain chains which may have adverse effects. This Gibb's effect also affects the precipitation. In addition, a spurious moisture source (SPURIOUS.H20) could also produce stationary clouds.
