Spin Up ---- -- The plans for Reanalysis are to produce new analysis for the 195x to 1994. (After 1995 and onwards will be covered by CDAS). For practical considerations, the first year of Reanalysis completed was 1985 and not 195x. The easier years are likely to provide valuable experience which can be applied to the more difficult years. In addition, the later years can be compared with both operational and other reanalysis efforts which is very helpful finding problems. The problem with running the Reanalysis in sections is the "joints". For example, in January 1, 1985 00Z, there will be a discontinuity. The discontinuity will be small for atmospheric quantities because the first section of the reanalysis started at the beginning of December 1984, allowing one month to 'spin-up' the system. (Upper stratospheric moisture may take longer to spin up as it is not well observed and moisture residence time is relatively long.) However, experience from the AMIP simulations is that a month is too short, and perhaps 1 year is need to spin-up the soil moisture. In summary, don't be surprised to see a discontinuity in the soil moisture and related fields (evaporation and perhaps surface temperature) at the "joints" where Reanalysis sections are put together.
